Jodie’s enhanced placement program follows Eldercare’s involvement in the Federal Government’s ReSeE TRACS (Resident Experience, Student Experience, Employability – Teaching and Research in Aged Care) Project. Its aim was to enhance Eldercare’s position as employer of choice and highlight the professional opportunities available in the aged care industry.
In 2013, nine facilitators were employed to support students on site and develop orientation and induction processes. The facilitators also identified areas of existing expertise so that staff could share this knowledge with students. This mentoring has been a positive experience for both staff and students.
Eldercare increased its placement hours from 2640 in 2012 to 9730 in 2013. The Eldercare program also includes students from other disciplines including social work, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy (see Gallery for graph showing composition of student placements for 2013).
Achievements of the program so far include:
- Increased number and range of student placements
- Increased awareness of student placement opportunities in residential aged care
- Reduced workload for managers in coordinating logistics for each placement
- Increased opportunities for recruitment and retention
- Development of new lifestyle programs with allied health students, providing enhanced learning opportunities and the ability to put theory into practice in an aged care setting
- Establishment of a strong, collaborative relationship between UniSA and Eldercare
