Acceptance speech leads to guest blogging opportunity for Eldercare nurse

Eldercare Enrolled Nurse Gary Campbell has this week added another skill to his list of talents becoming a guest blogger for the Aged Care Channel (ACC).

The opportunity to write for the website came about when local South Australian Shannon Sanderson, from the ACC, heard Gary share his aged care nursing insight and experience at the 2015 Aged and Community Services Gala Awards where he won ‘Best Employee’.

“I was inspired by Gary and believed others would be moved by his words,” said Shannon.

“We are always looking to support ‘good news’ stories in care and saw it as a privilege for the opportunity to share the work Gary and Eldercare are doing.”

Gary Campbell has been an Eldercare employee for nearly 30 years and is currently based at the organisation's Wayville aged care facility - The Lodge - where he primarily cares for residents living with dementia.

The enrolled nurse was ‘proud to be contributing to the ongoing conversation about how we may best support those living with a diagnosis of dementia’.

Gary said his first blog post, called ‘Home’, was designed to take readers ‘on a journey into the mind of someone living with dementia’.

He explained it was intended to convey the message that ‘we are all in this together’ because people living with dementia experienced ‘the same diverse feelings and needs as we all do’.

Gary said ‘Home’ was inspired by residents’ comments and included fictional as well as real life experiences.

It has been published to the ACC’s Australian and UK websites and also shared via the organisation’s newsletters and social media channels, including Facebook, and has promoted further conversations about dementia to an online audience across the globe.
