Resident artists flourish at Sash Ferguson thanks to new facilities

A purpose-built art studio has been established at Eldercare's Mount Barker residential aged care facility Sash Ferguson enabling residents to pursue their creative interests.

Site Operations Manager Nicole Cannon said the studio came about following requests from residents for a dedicated art space.

“A few residents have been painting some amazing canvas artworks but, up until now, they haven’t had an area where they could keep their equipment set up at all times,” said Nicole.

“Our new studio will have a positive impact on residents’ wellbeing and sense of purpose – it reflects our commitment to delivering person-centred care and highlights our ability to respect the dignity, rights and values of each resident.

“The studio will give residents, who are already making art, the freedom to work on their creations whenever they choose and it will also provide other residents the opportunity to attempt something new.”

New fixed work stations have been installed in the studio and there is a dedicated gallery space for resident artworks to be displayed and enjoyed by other residents, family members and staff.

Sash Ferguson resident Leslie Tomlinson had claimed her spot in the art studio before it was finished.

“It’s great to have this room just for art – I’m happier to come in and paint now,” said Leslie.

“I’ve painting for about 20 years – I started when I lived on Kangaroo Island and I was encouraged to start by one of my friends who was a part of the Country Women’s Association.

“We didn’t really have anything to do, other than work, and none of us had any money so it was nice for us to meet and paint together.”

Leslie entered two of her paintings in the Mount Barker District Show earlier this year and won first and third prize in the ‘Open Art – Over 90 Years’ category.

“It was lovely to win at the show but I like having my artworks displayed at Sash Ferguson as well – the people here say how lovely they are and I’m glad that others enjoy them.”
