Eldercare wins Future of Ageing Social Inclusion Award

Eldercare’s ElderPRIDE Program, introduced to ensure that Eldercare is a welcoming and supportive organisation for LGBTIQ residents, staff, volunteers and families, was named the winner of the Social Inclusion category in the Future of Ageing Awards.

In 2019 Eldercare was the first residential aged care organisation in South Australia to receive Rainbow Tick accreditation.

Eldercare Chief Executive Jane Pickering said the organisation is ‘thrilled’ to have received this award as it further validates that Eldercare is a safe and welcoming place for LGBTIQ people.

“We are all very proud of this exciting and innovative program, so it is an honour for it to have been recognised by Inside Ageing,” said Jane.

In 2020 Eldercare received a grant from the Office of Ageing Well to produce a short film to debunk the myths surrounding LGBTIQ residents and staff.

“This film is so powerful as we hear directly from LGBTIQ representatives about why some myths that still surround LGBTIQ people are exactly that – myths.”

The short film was created as a tool for staff training and general awareness raising to debunk the myths that still surround LGBTIQ residents, staff, volunteers and families.

It builds on the cultural safety and consumer engagement that were key strengths of Eldercare’s Rainbow Tick accreditation.

The winners of the Future of Ageing Awards will now feature in webinars over the coming months to share their programs with others.

Eldercare is committed to sharing its full Rainbow Tick journey so that many aged care organisations can provide safe and welcoming services for all LGBTIQ people.
